The idea was ambitious: bring together acclaimed children's book writer Libby Hathorn and an icon of the modern art world, Benny Andrews. The result was Sky Sash, So Blue, a one act children's opera rich in choreographic design and modern, original musical elements. 

 

With a libretto by Libby and sets by Benny, the Birmingham Institute of Aesthetic Education knew they had a solid piece around which lessons in social studies, language arts, and fine arts. Sky Sash, So Blue enjoyed a solid run at the Birmingham Museum of Art in tandem with an exhibit of Benny’s work.
